ABSTRAKT

The toxic effect of some of the commercially available pesticides on isolate of The toxic effect of some of the commercially available pesticides on isolate of Anabaena variabilis (BTA-21) was analyzed in terms of growth and nitrogen fixing ability. Long-term observation showed that in general, there was no inhibitory effect of pesticides on growth and nitrogen fixing ability at lower concentration of pesticide but a decreasing trend above 5 ppm concentration of pesticide was observed. However, this isolate was found to be tolerant to 2, 4-D (200 ppm), aldrin (100 ppm), and dimecron (50 ppm). In the case of endosulphan, malathion and parathion, tolerance was not observed above 25 ppm concentration. The results after 20 days were more or less same except re-appearance of growth at certain higher concentration of pesticides. Pesticide such as Aldrin was found to be more lethal in long term, as growth and cellular nitrogen declined more sharply than in case of other pesticides. Results of extra-cellular nitrogen indicated that there was a degradation of pesticides, especially which have nitrogen in their configuration (Dimecron and Parathion).
