Ultrastructural effects of heavy metals on the epidermal cells of Dilophus spiralis (Mont) Hamel (Dictyotales, Phaeophyta)

The effects of zinc (3.2 mg/L, 6.5 mg/L, 13 mg/L), copper (0.7 mg/L, 1.4 mg/L, 2.8 mg/L), and cadmium (l mg/L, 2 mg/L, 10 mg/L) on the fine structure of epidermal cells of Dilophus spiralis were examined under laboratory conditions. In all cases electron dense material was deposited in the vacuoles, the cytoplasm, and, mainly, the cell wall, which displayed a looser than normal arrangement of fibrils.
