Catalase activity of Black Sea kelp from genus Cystoseira C. Ag. under different ecological conditions
ABSTRAKT
Seasonal dynamics and variability of catalase activity (CA) of the Black Sea algae Cystoseira crinita (Desf.) Bory and C. barbata C. Ag. were investigated at a depth range of 1−10 m where they are dominants. CA of investigated species decreased with depth: in C. crinita from 450 to 12 mkg H2O2/g tissue·min, and in C. barbata from 250 to 1.7 mkg H2O2/tissue·min. Maximal values of CA in C. crinita were recorded at a depth of 1 m in spring, and at 3−5 m in winter. In C. barbata CA maximal values were fixed at a depth of 3−5 m irrespective of seasons. The closest similarity of the CA values in studied species was observed in spring, probably due to the process of reproduction. CA response on anthropogenic pollution was not clear, however, a certain tendency towards a decrease of CA in studied species has been observed.
