ABSTRAKT

Catalase activity (CA) of dominants of Black Sea macroalgae in domestic sewage pollution was studied (using the example of Sevastopol coastal waters). Its change was shown at different depths under different environmental conditions. The intervals corresponding to conventionally normal functioning of the macroalgae CA were revealed. The levels of normal responses under local conditions for Ulva intestinalis L. were 34 ± 9, for Cystoseira barbata (Stackh.) C. Agardh 64 ± 15, and for Ceramium virgatum Roth 7 ± 12 mcg H2O2 /(g · min). It was established that the macroalgae CA of different taxonomic groups depends on growing conditions. Therefore, Rhodophyta manifests the maximal increase of the CA values 2.5 times on average in severely polluted water areas compared to those lightly polluted. The intermediate level of CA in the studied gradient of pollution is characteristic of Chlorophyta; its values increase 1.4 times, while no variation of the CA values was found in brown algae, except Cystoseira crinita Duby. The CA change of different species of taxonomic groups during life cycles and seasonal rhythms were shown. During reproduction for Chlorophyta the CA values increased 1.5−1.8 times, Rhodophyta 2.7 times, and increased 3.7 times for Phaeophyta. The increase in the CA values was 5.3 times in late autumn compared with the spring record for C. barbata. In spring and summer the macroalgae, in most cases, showed maximal CA values at 1 m with minimum values − at 10 m depth, in winter the maximum CA for Rhodophyta value was recorded at 10 m, and for Phaeophyta at 3−5 m depth. During the autumn period no distinct dynamics were revealed for CA values compared with various depths. A supposition was made that there were differences in the adaptation strategy of antioxidant systems of red, green, and brown macroalgae of the Black Sea.
