A Target Elbow Joint in Hemophilia and Odds of Developing Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow: A Cross-Sectional Study from a Tertiary Care Center in South India
ABSTRAKT
In spite of elbow being the second most common joint to bleed in hemophilia, literature on Ulnar Neuropathy at Elbow (UNE) in hemophilia is limited. A cross section study was performed to determine the occurrence of UNE and the factors associated with it in patients with hemophilia. 50 individuals, who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were included in the study after obtaining informed consent. A systematic history, clinical and electrophysiological examination was done for all the individuals to find the occurrence and characteristics of elbow bleeds and the presence of Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow. UNE was found in 21 out of the 50 participants. Bilateral UNE was found in 5 individuals. The odds ratio of a target joint being associated with UNE was found to be 7.4 (p value < 0.05). The odds ratio of postural abuse of elbow joint being associated with UNE was 2.9 (p value 0.06). The odds of having UNE were higher with progress in stage of hemophilic arthropathy (p value < 0.05). UNE is common in hemophilia. A target elbow joint is associated with higher risk of UNE.
