ABSTRAKT

The oxidation of niobium at 700°C and at air pressures from 30 to 1000 hPa leads to the formation of a stratified oxide scale. Analyses of the evolutions of the phases, the crystalline textures and mechanical stresses during oxidation are determined by X-ray diffraction techniques. Interactions of chemical and mechanical processes constitute the driving force of the reaction and can explain the stratified morphology of niobium oxide.
