Abstract

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the effect of micro roughness and physical properties of the heating surface on the heat transfer of ternary mixtures in nucleate pool boiling. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and standard gravity conditions. In nucleate pool boiling, heat transfer is a function of the thermo-physical and transport properties, composition of the mixture, surface-liquid interactions and surface micro-roughness. The steady state pool boiling heat flux was obtained for ternary mixtures of acetone-isopropanol-water and acetone-MEK-water systems on different types of surfaces such as aluminium, brass and copper. For a given wall superheat, heat flux data of the mixtures at various compositions and on different surfaces were obtained and correlated in terms of a surface roughness parameter and a surface-liquid interaction parameter, the thermo physical and transport properties of the heating surface and the liquid and the wall superheat. Further, the experimental data was compared with the existing literature correlations.
