摘要

Nanofluids, due to their enhanced heat transfer capacity as compared to traditional fluids, provide opportunities for use in applications requiring high heat transfer rates in small component sizes, such as electronic cooling systems. In this work numerical results are provided for free convective heat transfer using three different nanofluids contained in horizontal and vertical cavities. Results indicate that considerable heat transfer enhancement is possible using nanofluids. Also, the heat transfer performance is dependent on parameters such as orientation of the cavity, Grashof number and solid volume fraction in the nanofluid. For water-γAl2O3 nanofluid, the increase of the average heat transfer coefficient was approximately 30% for 10 vol% nanoparticles. The maximum increase in heat transfer performance of 80% was obtained for 10 vol% Cu nanoparticles dispersed in water. Furthermore, the average heat transfer coefficient was seen to increase by up to 100% for the nanofluid consisting of oil containing 1 vol% carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the presence of nanoparticles in the base fluid was found to alter the structure of the fluid flow for horizontal orientation of the heated wall.
