Abstract

Large eddy simulation (LES) was performed to simulate complex turbulent flows and heat transfer around the junction region between the leading edge of a symmetric vane and its endwall, which are characterized by a horseshoe vortex (HV) and its accompanying vortices showing strong unsteady behavior. This paper describes the relation between the unsteady behavior of such vortices and the endwall heat transfer in comparison with the experimental flow and heat transfer fields obtained by particle image velocimetry and naphthalene sublimation method. As a result, the time-mean Stanton number by LES shows a quantitative agreement with the experimental data. The HV shows almost random behavior as similarly observed in the experiments. The dynamics of HV and its effect on endwall heat transfer is discussed in detail.
