Fractal dimension of trees and turbulent transfer of heat and moisture
摘要
A small leaf has large thermal conductivity against to the surrounding air flow and the leaf can keep its surface temperature low. To avoid interference with adjacent leaves, the leaves of a tree should be distributed suitably. To measure the fractal dimension of the tree, 3-D leaser measurements were conducted for two types of trees. The results showed that both trees have fractal dimension 2. This is a minimal value for the plants to absorb the sunshine effectively, and this small value serves to ensure sufficient air flow to cool down the leaves for the plant. This structure also contributes to turbulent transfer of any scalar variable such as moisture. This advantage of fractal structure can be applied to very wide problem where high efficiency of turbulent transfer is required.
