Abstract

The safety of nuclear reactors is a major factor affecting the deployment of nuclear electricity generating plants. For this reason the heat transfer associated with various hypothetical reactor accidents and off-normal operations continues to be actively researched in laboratories throughout the world. This volume is another addition to the rapidly growing literature in this field. It comprises a total of 48 contributed papers and 11 invited papers that were delivered at the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer Seminar on Nuclear Reactor Safety Heat Transfer in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, September 1-5, 1980. A companion volume, edited by Owen С Jones, Jr., comprises the notes from the Summer School on Nuclear Reactor Safety Heat Transfer, held under the same auspices the previous week, August 24-29, 1980. Together these volumes constitute an excellent summary of the current state of the art in both fast reactor and light-water reactor safety. The proceedings of several other symposia on the same subject have recently become available, but the present volume is fairly unusual in two respects. The first is that a conscious effort was made to develop invited lectures covering large-scale experimental and computational efforts in the various countries currently involved in this field. Some broad overviews of national programs, summarizing recent accomplishments, are thus collected in a fashion rarely available previously. A second feature of these seminars is the active participation of researchers from the Socialist countries, including the Soviet Union, to an extent not achieved elsewhere. The informal exchanges between eastern and western researchers were one of the most valuable aspects of the seminar.
