2.2 Steady and Unsteady Film Boiling Heat Transfer at Subatmospheric and Elevated Pressures

Abstract

Steady and unsteady film boiling phenomena on a horizontal test heater in a pool of saturated and subcooled water are investigated at pressures ranging from 20 kPa to 2 MPa. Platinum cylinders of 1.2 and 2 mm in diameters are used as the test heater. Saturated film boiling heat transfer coefficients almost agree with those predicted by Bromley's equation and Breen and Westwater's equation. Semi-empirical equation of subcooled film boiling heat transfer coefficient and empirical equation of saturated film boiling minimum temperature are given. Minimum temperature of film boiling may be determined either by hydrodynamic Taylor instability or by homogeneous nucleation temperature; which is governing is dependent on the system pressure and the water subcooling. However, minimum temperature and heat flux of saturated film boiling in the hydrodynamic Taylor instability governing region do not agree with those predicted by the Berenson's equation and Lienhard and Wong's equation based on hydrodynamic Taylor instability. The heat transfer coefficients, the minimum temperature and the minimum heat flux in unsteady film boiling caused by step reduction of the heat input to the heater which was initially in steady film boiling and by rapid submersion of the preheated test heater into water are almost consistent with the corresponding steady-state values.
