摘要

Relatively novel combustion chamber geometries, whose designs generally include a piston with a bowl and a small projection in the middle of the bowl for direct injection stratified charge (DISC) and diesel engines, have been suggested by Tanasawa et al. [1] and, recently, by Kato and Onishi [2]. The basic geometry exhibits a raised surface at or near the center of the piston bowl, onto which some or all of the fuel spray impacts. The liquid which impacts the raised surface is expected to provide a centrally located cloud of fuel drops and fuel vapor which will enhance the subsequent combustion event.
To date, the dispersion processes of the spray impinging on a flat end of a round projection (an impinged stick) in a high pressure unheated bomb have been extensively studied experimentally by us [3]. Here, we present the application of spray image processing of focused shadow images combined with the computerized tomographic transformation (CT method) to the analyses of the internal structure and the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of the impinging spray. A set of experiments has been performed for clarifying the effects of impingement conditions, such as the diameter of the impinged stick and the distance from the nozzle to the impinged stick.
