%X A numerical model of a free-convective flow and heat transfer in a high closed interlayer with fins on its isothermal side walls has been developed. The Navier-Stokes equations in two-dimensional statement were solved numerically. The influence of the height of the fins and of their spacing on the flow structure, local and average heat transfer rate was studied. The calculations were performed in the range of Rayleigh numbers Ra = 10^{3} − 10^{5} when there are a laminar and a multicellular modes of convection. Two types of fins: adiabatic and with infinite thermal conductivity are considered. It has been established that the average heat transfer coefficient over the interlayer surface for adiabatic fins first increases with the number of fins, attains a maximum and then decreases. The effect of the decrease in the heat transfer rate amounts to about 30% as compared to smooth walls. For heat conducting fins the enhancement in the heat transfer rate may attain 200% and more. On finning both walls, the heat transfer rate through the layer increases insignificantly.
