Under experimental conditions, the flow structure was found to be unstable and the source region to be filling the whole cavity. The ensemble-average velocity field in the rotating cavity is discussed in this paper. With this data, the nondimensional core velocity could be acquired and used to estimate the total pressure loss in a rotating cavity with a radial inflow. At the same time, the PIV measurements could provide the spatial distribution of the instantaneous velocity. Experiments were conducted with a rotational Reynolds number of 3.97 × 105 and a nondimensional mass flow rate of 1.32 × 104. %8 2011-02-12
