The choice of the linear fracture criterion of the Mohr type and its compliance with the lower bound for ultimate loading is validated. The change in the fracture mechanisms from fiber breaking to matrix failure and back is investigated. The effect of the difference in the tensile and compressive moduli of elasticity of monolayers is analyzed. Fracture of monolayers and the strength of the composite as a whole are described. Closed formulas for the composite strength analysis with forces acting in an arbitrary direction are provided. The predicted values are compared to available experimental data. %8 2019-10-21
