AN EXPERIMENT ON FLOW DISTRIBUTION AND MIXING IN IMPINGING JET SPRAYS

ABSTRACT

Injecting water and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) solution simulates the mixing process in impinging jet sprays of liquid oxidizer and liquid fuel for both symmetric and asymmetric cases. Liquid sheets are visualized, and the mixing behaviors of two streams are measured by collecting droplets using sampling cells. The mixing characteristics between the two liquids are investigated by the acid-base titration technique.
For nearly symmetric impinging jets, stable liquid sheets are formed and the two liquid jets are well mixed. Similarity inflow rate distribution at various measuring heights is maintained. For asymmetric impinging jets, liquid sheets become unstable as the difference in jet velocity increases. In some extreme cases, liquid sheets are not formed and the jets are separated. Dimensionless variables are adopted, demonstrating similarity inflow and mixing distribution. Model predictions agree reasonably with experimental results.
