MULTISTATE BEHAVIOR OF A DROPLET IN DILUTE SPRAYS

ABSTRACT

Multistate behavior of a convecting droplet in wide ranges of Reynolds number, Re, Damköhler number, Da, Spalding transfer number, B, and Prandtl number, Pr, is examined, and various multiple-state characteristics, including triple, dual, and single state, are identified. State criteria for the determination of four principal states, preheating, vaporization, combustion with an envelope flame, or wake flame, are established on the basis of transition events: ignition, blow-off, extinction, and reattachment of a prospective flame. Interphase exchange rates for each state are provided in terms of four principal parameters, Re, Da, B, and Pr, to aid in the prediction of structure and group combustion behavior of droplet clouds and sprays.
