DIESEL SPRAY IMPINGING ON A FLAT WALL. PART II: VOLUME AND AVERAGE AIR-FUEL RATIO OF AN IMPINGEMENT DIESEL SPRAY

ABSTRACT

Both the diesel spray impinging vertically on a flat wall and adhering characteristics of the fuel on the wall were investigated experimentally. Spray tip penetration and spray volume of before-and-after impingement were measured on high-speed photographs of the spray, which was injected by a single-shot injection system into a high-pressure chamber in cold state. In order to measure the adhered fuel mass, a thin aluminum plate was placed on the impingement wall. The amount of fuel that stuck on the plate was measured by a precision balance. The volume of impingement spray increased more than that of the free spray when the spray was impinged on the wall before the breakup. Also, by decreasing impingement distance, the air-fuel ratio increased. The spray volume and the air-fuel ratio were greatly affected by the wall distance, while ambient pressure did not much affect them. Impingement of the diesel spray caused a lean fuel concentration in comparison with that of the free spray. Also, the air-fuel ratio was considerably affected by the adhering fuel mass.
