NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF CONDUCTING FIN SHAPES EFFECT ON FLOW BEHAVIOR AND HEAT TRANSFER ADJACENT TO THE SIDEWALL OF A DIFFERENTIALLY HEATED CAVITY
摘要
Unsteady thermal flow inside a differentially heated cavity, which is formed by horizontal adiabatic and isothermal vertical walls, is numerically investigated. A cavity with a thin fin, which is well documented in the specialized literature, is used as a baseline validation case. Then, three cases with modified fins are investigated and compared to the baseline case. In all cases the fin is placed on the middle of the vertical hot wall. For Ra = 1.84E09, computations are conducted in a transient mode starting from rest to 10 s in such a way that instantaneous features are reported. The fin modifications consist of an additional vertical part which is directed upward, downward, and simultaneously in the two directions for the three modified cases. Numerical investigations based on the finite volume method showed that the fin modifications have a significant influence on thermal and dynamical flow structures. Depending on the modified geometry the flow structures are modified and influence the thermal field.
