PREDICTION OF HOLE INSTABILITY (ENLARGEMENT) BY SLURRY EROSIVE WEAR MEASUREMENT STUDIES: IN THE CONTEXT OF PETROLEUM WELL-DRILLING INDUSTRIES

ABSTRACT

Hole instability (enlargement) of the borehole for oil or gas exploration is primarily governed by erosive wear caused by drill cuttings in the drilling slurry. The borehole wear rate and wall shear stress depend on the solid particle size, particle shape, particle concentration, material of the particles in the slurry, and flow conditions, as well as the mechanical properties of the material becoming eroded. This paper presents an experimental approach to predict the wear ensued by drilling slurry carrying the particles of drilled cuttings, using the slurry erosion test rig TR-40 (made by DUCOM Instruments, Bengaluru, India). The wear rate, wall shear stress, and friction factors were obtained for different slurry conditions. Various slurry conditions responsible for hole instability were predicted for a vertical borehole through the wear rate and wall shear stress trends manifested by different drilling slurries. The effectiveness of this approach was also examined in relation to its applicability in detecting hole instability in horizontal annular wellbores.
