EXAMINATION OF THE PARTICLE SHAPE ' EFFECT ON INTERPARTICLE STRESS AND VOLUME OF WATER CONTENT IN UNSATURATED SOIL

摘要

The purpose of this study is to highlight the influence of particle shape in a soil-water mixtures. Until now, all of the studies determining water content around particles in unsaturated soil have done so with the spherical shape assumption, and most of the quantities such as matric suction and interparticle stress due to water meniscus were calculated from it. But the amount of spherical grains in soils is negligible, whereas employing the ellipsoid shape for solid particles in two dimensions exhibits better results. Two packing methods of ellipsoidal particles are studied in the current work considering changes in meniscus geometry, so the matric suction, interparticle stress, and water content volume are evaluated as functions of meniscus radii for soil particles under the pore-water regime. This analysis, providing a theoretical basis for describing several well-known phenomena in unsaturated soil behavior by rigorous analytical equations, was developed for describing the total volume of menisci between contacting ellipsoidal soil grains by treating the zero contact angle. The matric suction characteristic curve is modeled using the analytical solution of displayed behavior, similar to real unsaturated soils with ellipsoidal particles.
