ABSTRACT

This paper presents the numerical investigations on effect of thermal buoyancy (aiding or opposing) in flow past circular cylinders that are heated or cooled and kept in staggered configuration in a vertical duct. The change in heat transfer and flow characteristics is studied by varying the following parameters, like Richardson number (Ri), cylinder spacing (S) and Reynolds number (Re). Natural convection is modeled using the Boussinesq approximation. The study reveals that for certain Ri vortex shedding from the cylinder, that are placed behind, gets suppressed due to the change in flow patterns around the upstream cylinder. The critical Ri values were found to vary for different spacing indicating the influence of the channel walls in stabilizing the flow. The streamlines, vortex structures and isotherm patterns for different spacing (0.75, 1, 1.25), Ri (-4 to +4) and Re (100,180) are presented and discussed. Nusselt number (Nu) increases monotonically with Ri for middle cylinder with decreasing strength of opposing buoyancy whereas it degrades with decreasing strength of opposing buoyancy. There is monotonic increase in Nu with increasing strength of aiding buoyancy for all cylinders. Study also reveals that Nu and CD are strong functions of spacing and Re.
