Structure of Dreissena Polymorpha Population in the Lake Cooling System of the Thermal Power Plants (on the Problem of Population Non-Uniformity in the Heterogeneous Environment)

ABSTRACT

The structure of Dreissena polymorpha population in the system of the Konin lakes (Poland) used as the cooling system of two thermal power plants was studied in summer 1993-1998. Despite a high diversity of the indices of its numbers, biomass, and dimensional structure the studied population was found to be stable. It is likely that a stable state of D. polymorpha population in the system of the Konin lakes was conditioned by the increase in its biotic diversity related to a wide variety of the environmental conditions, in particular to a great diversity of biotopes.
