ABSTRACT

In the present work, an experimental investigation has been done to study the characteristics of the flow inside a horizontal enclosure containing baffle plates. The experimental runs were carried out for different values of Reynolds numbers, number of baffles, baffle spacing, ratio of baffle plate length to the width of enclosure, and inlet/outlet width. This is an important problem in the scope of nuclear industries, chemical industrial processes, drying processes, etc., where the characterization of the flow as well as the existence and the extension of possible recirculations need to be identified. The obtained results indicate that the number of baffle plates, baffle plate length, and inlet/outlet width have significant effect on flow fields. The largest variation of flow field occurs near the tips of the baffles. The result reveals the nature of a complex flow field due to interference effects.
